**Staging Environments Are a Lie**

Why you should start testing in production.

## The Data Gap

- **The Problem** — Staging data is never real. It's either anonymized (broken) or old.
- **The Traffic** — Staging has zero load. Production has thousands of concurrent users.
- **The Result** — "It worked on my machine" becomes "It worked on Staging".

## Enter the Canary

- **Concept** — Release the update to 1% of real users. 99% stay on the old version.
- **Monitoring** — Watch the error rate of that 1% like a hawk.
- **Safety** — If errors spike, rollback instantly. Only 1% were affected.

## Tooling: Feature Flags

LaunchDarkly / Statsig / Flipt

- **Decoupling** — Deploy the code, but keep the feature turned 'OFF'.
- **Targeting** — Turn it 'ON' only for internal employees first.
- **Kill Switch** — Found a bug? Turn the flag off. No redeploy needed.

## The 'Dark Launch'

- **Shadow Traffic** — Send requests to the new version, but don't show the user the result.
- **Validation** — Compare the 'Shadow' response with the real response to check correctness.

## The Cultural Shift

- **Developer Ownership** — Devs must monitor their features after release.
- **Lower Stress** — Releasing is no longer a 'big bang' event. It's a dial you turn up.

## Summary: Real Data Wins

Test safely, but test where it counts.

> The only environment that matters is Production.
